When most people think about tumor detection, they focus on MRI scans, mammograms, palpation, and other techniques. But did you know that ultrasound could also play a role in identifying tumors? What exactly is diagnostic ultrasound, and how might it help you to detect significant health problems as early on as possible? Read this blog post to find out.
What Is Diagnostic Ultrasound?
Ultrasound may also be referred to as sonography. This noninvasive diagnostic test uses a specific type of sound waves, which travel through human tissues and provide a real-time view of what is going on inside the body.
Ultrasound is best known for its role in monitoring the health of a pregnant individual’s developing baby; it is ideal for this purpose because it does not emit any radiation. However, the applications of ultrasound go far beyond pregnancy.
For example, it can be used to help providers pinpoint exactly where to inject healing solutions so they have the greatest effect. It can also help to identify a range of musculoskeletal issues, such as those that affect the muscles, tendons, ligaments, and nerves.
Ultrasound’s Role in Detecting Tumors
The sound waves used in sonography interact differently with tumors and cysts than they do with normal, healthy tissues. Therefore, this tool can allow a doctor to identify potential areas of concern in many different parts of the body. For example, you might be urged to undergo a breast ultrasound if your mammogram reveals anything unusual. An ultrasound could also be used to detect abnormalities around the kidneys, thyroid, and pelvic organs.
Ultrasound’s Limitations
Ultrasound is very useful, but it does have its limitations. For example, the sound waves do not travel well through bones, so it cannot be used to closely examine organs that are tucked within the ribcage.
Additionally, it cannot reveal whether a tumor or cyst is cancerous or not. Therefore, you should not jump to conclusions if an ultrasound test reveals an abnormal growth. If necessary, your doctor will refer you for further testing so you can gain a thorough understanding of your condition.
Diagnostic ultrasound is a simple and reliable way to gain a greater knowledge of your health! Ask your provider if it could benefit you.
