In addition to consulting with a doctor, there are also a few exercises you can do on your own to relieve the chronic hand and wrist pain. Give these a try, but be sure to start slow, and if anything causes discomfort, don\u2019t push it. These shouldn\u2019t substitute for treatment from a doctor, but they can provide a much-needed short term solution to improve your comfort and function. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Shake It Off <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Taylor Swift was onto something when she sang \u201cShake It Off.\u201d\nSimply shake your hands whenever you start to feel bothered by your symptoms.\nDon\u2019t shake too hard or too often, or this could actually make things worse!\nThis should feel relaxing, not strenuous. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">High Five? <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Start by making a fist, and then slowly open your hand until\nyour fingers are pointing toward the ceiling, almost like you\u2019re prompting a\nfriend to give you a high five. It\u2019s perfectly fine to be left hanging this\ntime around! Repeat about 5-10 times. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A-Ok<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Touch the tip of each finger to the end of your thumb. It\nshould look like you\u2019re making the OK sign when using your index finger. This\ncan be repeated throughout the day, just be sure to <em>not <\/em>press your\nfingers into your thumb with any force. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Main Squeeze <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Do you have a tennis ball or stress ball lying around? If not,\ngrab a pair of balled-up socks. Gently squeeze, hold for 5 seconds, and then repeat\n10 times. Do this 3 times a day <em>max<\/em>. Once again, don\u2019t be too enthusiastic\nwhen squeezing, you\u2019re not trying to get juice out of an orange or anything! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Bridge Stretches <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Sitting at a table, rest your elbows and forearms on the\nsurface so that your wrists hang over the edge, palms facing upward. Slowly, bend\nyour wrist so that your fingers are pointing toward the ceiling, and hold for 5\nseconds. Return to a straight, neutral position, and then bend so that your fingers\nare facing the floor. Hold for 5 seconds, then straighten your wrists again. Your\nhands should look similar to a bridge going up and down. Repeat this cycle 10 times\nup to 3 times a day. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These exercises can be tremendously helpful for providing\ntemporary relief from hand and wrist pain, but you should still follow your\ndoctor\u2019s instructions when it comes to treating CTS.
